It is a splendid morning where I am in Atenas. As I gaze out my window, I can
appreciate the still-lush landscape of November, hear the songs of the birds
and delight in the way they spread their wings and let the wind carry them.
Their carefree travel from tree to tree bring me immediate awareness of the
importance of seizing the present moment and flowing through the day in
gratitude and positive anticipation.
December’s cool breezes will begin soon in Costa Rica. We are all readying
our minds and spirits (and our homes, of course) for the many visitors we will
receive during the season’s celebrations. The holiday spirit has become quite
evident everywhere we look. Many of us have volunteered to do something in
our community to ensure that families less fortunate than ours have gifts and
food to share during this important time of year.
Earlier this week, the Guitar Orchestra of the University of Costa Rica visited
the Hogar de Ancianos and offered a wonderful concert which was appreciated
by the residents, staff and invited guests. It was a lovely gift which provided
physical, emotional and mental therapy to all of us for a little while. As I sat
and listened to the music, I noticed the residents participating from their seats
by tapping and swaying to the music. One resident was actually ‘conducting’
from her chair and another volunteered to sing along with the group at the end.
The UCR Guitar Orchestra - missing is the young professor who was taking the picture!
The ability of music to enhance our lives was evident from the smiling faces and
positive comments; the event was another great success at the Hogar! We are
all looking forward to another visit from this group in 2016. I was deeply inspired,
not only by the musical talents, but also by the camaraderie the young people (ages
18-25) were able to establish with the residents who were many years their senior.
Next week will find our little town equally busy with events, starting with Su
Espacio’s XII Festival of Arts and Dance on December 2nd at 6 p.m.; Colinas
Azul School’s Graduation on December 3rd at 6 p.m.; the Angel Tree Christmas
party on Saturday December 5th at 9 a.m. and finally the tree lighting on December
6th. Let’s remember to take care of our bodies during this hectic time so we can live
the peace and joy of the season in good health.
Have a great day and week, Marietta
